Migrant shipwrecks, increase in risky crossing points. Lessons learned in the Mediterranean
The Mediterranean Sea, the main migration route between Africa and Europe, is the scene of numerous tragedies, with a high number of victims among migrants. Migratory flows come mainly from sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. NGOs such as SOS Méditerranée play a key role in rescue operations, but it is clear that international law, which obliges states to provide assistance at sea, is not always respected. What migration policies and what organization of sea rescue operations are needed to put an end to this unsustainable situation?
